Description

A traditional Amish hamburger steak bake made with seasoned ground beef patties, savory mushroom-onion gravy, and baked to perfection. This comforting one-pan meal is hearty, satisfying, and perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

1.5 pounds ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)

1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs

1 large egg

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)

1 tablespoon butter or oil

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

1 cup mushrooms, sliced

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for gluten-free)

2 cups beef stock or broth

Optional: garlic powder, dried parsley, thyme

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently until just combined.

2. Shape into 4-6 patties and brown them in a skillet over medium-high heat. Set aside.

3. In the same pan, sauté onions and mushrooms in butter until golden and tender.

4. Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir for 1-2 minutes.

5. Gradually pour in beef stock, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Simmer until thickened.

6. Return patties to the skillet or place them in a baking dish. Pour the gravy over the patties.

7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).

8. Let rest for a few minutes before serving with mashed potatoes, noodles, or bread.

Notes

Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and cornstarch if needed.

Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version.

For extra richness, swap half the beef stock with heavy cream.
